Empowering Students: Engaging with City Officials at Woodhaven Prep

Students from Woodhaven Recovery meet with city officials in a government building, developing leadership and civic responsibility through Woodhaven Academy.

Last week, our students at Woodhaven Prep had an incredible opportunity to meet with key city officials from Scranton. This special visit included the Deputy Solicitor, Special Assistant to the Mayor, and the Economic Development Coordinator. At Woodhaven, community engagement is integrated into our educational philosophy. We believe in equipping our students not only with academic knowledge but also with a deep understanding of the place they call home.

In our classrooms, students delve into the rich history, economic landscape, and social fabric of our local community, comparing it to the communities where they were raised. Through interviews with residents and discussions about neighborhood changes, they gain valuable insights into the challenges and transformations shaping communities.

During the session with city officials, our students showcased their understanding by asking thought provoking questions that mirrored their deep connection to Scranton. One student bravely shared his personal journey at Woodhaven on Mulberry Street, emphasizing how the supportive community here has been instrumental in his recovery and growth.

As an educator, witnessing this exchange was nothing short of inspiring. It reaffirmed that every voice matters and that our students are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are leaders today. Their confidence, poise, and unwavering determination left me brimming with pride.

From uncertain beginnings to confident individuals, our students have undergone a remarkable transformation during their time at Woodhaven. This year, as they prepare to graduate from high school, they carry with them not only diplomas but also a sense of purpose and a commitment to making a difference. One student is already set to pursue a course of study in architecture, and another is enrolled at Penn State University, while others explore various career paths with excitement and ambition.

In a time when many schools struggle to ignite civic responsibility, we take pride in nurturing active citizens who understand the importance of community engagement. Our students' interactions with city officials highlight the value of instilling civic duty and fostering a sense of belonging in our educational curriculum.

I am honored to introduce these exceptional young men to our community's leaders, knowing they represent the promise of a bright future. Congratulations to our Woodhaven Prep students – they are truly extraordinary!
